LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES
Since the mid 1980’s, Coleman Lew & Associates has provided assessment services for executive selection and development. In 2007, Coleman Lew significantly increased its investment in this area with the acquisition of GOLD Consulting, LLC and the addition of Scott Golden, MS as a Partner in the firm. Coleman Lew now provides a full line of customized leadership development services including: Assessment for Selection, Executive Team Building, New Leader Transition, Executive Coaching, Succession Planning, and the design of Assessment Center and Leadership Development Systems.
In today’s challenging business environment, leadership and leadership development are more important than ever. Business models are changing radically, and even those managers who have substantial experience may not be the right fit to address the challenges of the new marketplace. Baby boom-age leaders are approaching the retirement stage of their careers, and next generation business leaders are not only fewer numerically, but have frequently been under-prepared for enterprise wide leadership.
Leadership selection and development decisions, always important to optimizing organizational success, become even more critical in a tumultuous economy. The professional leadership consulting team at Coleman Lew helps to increase the assurance of identifying and developing the best leaders to confront the new realities and capitalize on the new opportunities facing an enterprise. SEARCHING FOR LEADERS IN AN ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
The right leadership is important to any organization. Leadership is even more important during times of economic uncertainty. Key leadership needs can arise at any time and for various reasons. A company’s response to filling an executive opening when there is not a qualified internal successor may be critical to the organization’s continued success.
Several misconceptions exist about searching for leaders when the economy is not robust:
There are plenty of people on the market; we can find who we need easily.
While many people may be looking for positions, organizations that assume they can find the best candidates by advertising and job postings are a bit naïve. Finding the right executive is not only about finding the right experience, but also the right leadership skills and cultural fit. Sourcing for the position by postings and advertisements is a passive solution. Such action is similar to fishing in the ocean because many fish can be found there, but only being willing to take the ones that jump in your boat rather than purposely fishing for the desired catch. The dynamics of proactively searching and targeting the right executive for your organization do not change because there are a large number of people looking for employment.
We can save money in the short term by not filling the position.
If the opening involves a truly necessary position, this attitude can be damaging to productivity and morale. While there may be short-term hard cost savings, the loss of sales and productivity as well as the long-term opportunity costs may be significantly higher than any realized savings. In addition, filling the position typically does not happen overnight. There is usually a period of time spent sourcing candidates, evaluating and interviewing them, and finally consummating the agreement. Given the many issues facing incoming executives, including relocation, it can easily take three months or longer for the recruited executive to begin new employment.
Since potential employees are plentiful, we can pay less than the market rate.
Executives should be compensated for the skills, value, and leadership they bring to the organization. Simply because economic times are uncertain, an organization should not try to unfairly take advantage of the value of their employees. Doing so is a precursor to short term relationships and the recipe for turnover when economic times improve.
